Federal Transit Administration Grant

The CNMI PSS has been receiving a formula grant from the Department of Transportation, Federal Transit Administration since the early 90s.   This funding is used to purchase School Buses and other rolling stock.  Since then, the PSS has managed to secure funding annually to include a contractual service for the CNMI Call-A-Ride Program which provides transportation for the elderly and disabled.  In 2009, the FTA awarded the CNM PSS with ARRA funding which will be used to renovate the existing Bus Facility in Lower Base.  This will be the first time that a major renovation of the facility will take place.  This renovation will include office spaces for the Pupil Transportation Personnel, conference rooms, warehouse space, bay areas and parking spaces for all the school buses.  The PSS was also successful in securing funding for the purchase of 12 new school buses which would allow for more service routes throughout the all three islands and upgrading its communications system.

In 2010, the PSS has submitted an application for the continuation of the management of the FTA grant program.  The administration of the funds is managed at the Central Office by a Federal Programs Coordinator who handles the daily monitoring of the grant.  Funding from this program has also allowed PSS to hire a Transportation Manager that oversees the operation of its Pupil Transportation.  The PSS will be purchasing 5 paratransit vans for all three islands to service disabled children that attend our public schools.  This grant program has allowed the PSS to provide reliable transpiration service for our students and will continue to improve as funding becomes available.
