The Social Studies Program integrates the social sciences and humanities to promote civic competence and participation. The curriculum is dynamic in order to prepare students for a society where change is rapid and constant. The realities of a globally interdependent world require students to understand their historical roots and draw upon historical knowledge. Students must learn to solve problems facing their local communities as well as emerging global issues. The Social Studies Standards and Benchmarks provide opportunities for students to develop skills in making not only personal choices but also economic choices based on limited resources. Students need preparation to face persistent dilemmas in our democracy. All students need to be confident in their ability as lifelong learners, to enter and adapt to a changing world of work and further the goals of democracy.
