Summer Interns Complete Intensive Seminar
The summer interns have completed their one week of orientation and instructional training
before they are assigned to their respective schools and programs. Designed to provide a variety
of learning opportunities, the summer school will be held on various elementary schools on
Saipan, Tinian and Rota, with a credit recovery program for high school students at Saipan
Southern High School, Rota High School and Tinian High School.
The summer program this year will feature an outdoor science instruction wherein students
will work alongside their mentors through an experiential science education with an innovative
curriculum and hands-on field experiences.
Chamorro and Carolinian Language and Heritage Studies will also enable students the
opportunity to enhance their understanding and appreciation of the Chamorro and Carolinian
Culture. Some of the activities of the CCLHS program include fieldtrips to Ancient Chamorro
sites, will experience presentations made by guest speakers in the expert area from various
agencies such as the Historic Preservation Office, Arts Council, Aging Office, and others, and will also experience simulations of traditional skills, and interviews of Chamorro Language and Cultural experts.
Another expectation of the CCLHS program will enable the Carolinian students to make/create
cultural artifacts and materials worn and used particularly in the Carolinian culture as part of
their costume.
The Culinary Arts Summer Program focuses on preparing a new generation of exceptional
students of Culinary Arts who will inspire elementary, junior high, and high school students’
interest and help them achieve academically and socially. Under the guidance of the Culinary
Arts teacher and mentors (PSS teachers), students will explore Culinary Arts as a vocation and
also participate in specially designed program activities which will enhance their experience in
the Culinary Arts. The Culinary Arts program will only be made available to students on Rota
due to popular demand and interests.
On a more intensified side of the summer program are the math and English course offerings.
This summer – students entering Grade 9 in the fall are expected to participate in a rigorous math
and English program.
In addition, there will be credit recovery courses that students who need to make up a course will
be able to do so during this summer. These courses range from English to Math and Science.
Principals and Program Managers Seminar on Evaluations June 27-29, 2011
The CNMI PSS and the State Board of Education will be launching its performance evaluations
for certified personnel this September when classes resume. Program Managers and School
Principals and Vice Principals will participate in a 3 day seminar on the evaluation tool that will
be implemented in the fall. The evaluation system is expected to:
• Measure the performance of individual teachers.
• Guide teachers as they reflect upon their effectiveness.
• Serve as the basis for instructional improvement.
• Focus the goals and objectives of schools and districts as they support, monitor, and
evaluate their teachers.
• Guide school and district professional development programs for teachers.
• Provide input for developing coaching and mentoring programs for teachers.
The evaluation system will also feature a tool that will be used for school administrators and
program managers. The purpose of the evaluation system for principals and program managers
is to assess their performances in relation to the research-based strategies that have been proven
to be effective.
