Science Program

The CNMI PSS Science Program believes that Science is for all students. This means that all students can learn science and deserve equal opportunity to do so. With a strong emphasis placed on high student performance, the program strives to meet the unique educational needs of every student through providing a safe, well-supported learning environment, highly qualified and efficient teachers, and active involvement of parents and stakeholders.

The CNMI Science Standards and Benchmarks define the science literacy expectation for all students. The content standards describe what all students are expected to learn.  The standards apply to all students regardless of age, gender, cultural or ethnic background, disabilities, aspirations, or interest in science. The program believes all students can develop the knowledge and skills described in the standards, and acknowledges that some students achieve well beyond these expectations.

The Science program thrives through the collaboration of school administrators, teachers, learning community, staff, students, parents, community members, government agencies, and other external partners. This strong collaboration allows the program to fulfill its goal of prioritizing and focusing on student achievement, which essentially promotes and advocates the PSS motto, “Students First.”

Program Goals:

  • The CNMI Public School System’s Science Program will focus on increasing student achievement so that by 2014, 90% of all PSS students will be at or above proficiency level in Science as measured by the PSS Standards-based Assessments. 
  • The CNMI Public School System’s Science program will continue to build capacity and provide support for all Science teachers to implement effective Standards-based classroom instruction. 

In order to achieve its goals, the Science program organizes, supports, and participates in a variety of activities including:

  • Implementation, monitoring, and sustaining standards-based classroom instruction
  • Provide quality professional development to build capacity of teachers
  • Provide differentiated instructional instruction to address different learning styles and multiple intelligences
  • Provide support and technical assistance to schools, teachers, and learning community
  • Outreach to involve parents, agencies, community, and other stakeholders as part of the learning collaboration and partnership

Health & HIV Program

The CNMI PSS Health/HIV program advocates health education for all students. The program believes that the health education of our students is a fundamental right in health promotion. The HIV program, in particular, provides sexual health education on HIV, sexually transmitted infections, and unwanted teen pregnancies. These elements are focused on and measured by the School-Level Impact Measures.

The CNMI Health Standards and Benchmarks delineate the health literacy expectations for our students. The program strives to provide a comprehensive curriculum and differentiated instruction to address the unique educational needs of each student. The schools provide fundamental health education, but the basis of health education is encouraged to be established and reinforced in the home. Ultimately, the program hopes to foster a stronger school system and a community conscious and sensitive to our health and the environment.

The Youth Risk Behavioral Survey, administered to all PSS secondary schools, directs the health-risk prevention efforts of the HIV program. In seeking to provide the best-quality academic experience to all our students, the program takes into account health-risk factors which may affect students’ academic performance.  Generally the program is observing a decline in the number of sexually active teens as well as a decline in students engaging in sexually risky behaviors. Through aggressive prevention efforts and continued education and support, we hope to see a continual decline and hope that our students are making good choices when faced with decisions affecting all aspects of their health.

The initiatives of the program are achieved through strong partnerships and collaboration with schools, teachers, parents, state and federal agencies, organizations, and other stakeholders. The HIV program has placed a high emphasis on parental involvement. The program advocates that health-risk prevention efforts are most sustainable with the continual collaboration and support of parents. Through accountability and responsibility, the partnership reveals that as education leaders and advocates, we play a fundamental role in shaping the future of our students.

Program Goals:

  • Increase the capacity of the CNMI PSS learning community/educators to sustain effective health education and HIV, STI, and unintended pregnancy prevention program. 
  • Increase sustainability and accountability of teachers to implement standards-based health education. 
  • Increase collaboration and cooperation with internal and external partners to strengthen and deliver effective health education. 
  • Continue strengthening the HIV program systematic procedures to monitor critical behaviors of CNMI youth through YRBS partnership.

In striving to achieve its goals, the Health/HIV program organizes, supports, and participates in a variety of activities such as:

  • Provide quality professional development to increase capacity in teachers and educators
  • Assess and monitor implementation of effective research-based classroom instructional strategies
  • Provide support and technical assistance to schools, teachers, and learning community
  • Outreach to involve parents, agencies, community, and other stakeholders as part of the learning collaboration and partnership
  • Administer YRBS to all secondary school students
